And there\u2019s been a huge push recently to do way more to reduce the hurt. Thankfully, technology is giving us the tools to move towards a greener lifestyle every day. Our goal is never to deceive our customers but to provide the most accurate and up-to-date statistics and information that we have. Lab-grown diamonds, just as the name states, are created under controlled conditions inside of a laboratory. These labs are inside buildings where energy is used to power the needed electricity to run the man-made diamond machinery. More on this in a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, we have mined diamonds. Since these stones are formed deep within the earth\u2019s surface, companies must employ miners to go \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 deep within the earth\u2019s surface. But gone are the days of handheld pitchforks and shovels. Today, there are three main mining techniques, all of which use heavy machinery to extract these diamonds.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Open-Pit Mining?<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cleanorigin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pexels-pixabay-461789-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uat.cleanorigin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pexels-pixabay-461789-edited.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/uat.cleanorigin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pexels-pixabay-461789-edited-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uat.cleanorigin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pexels-pixabay-461789-edited-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uat.cleanorigin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/pexels-pixabay-461789-edited-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From rock blasting to the use of excavators, open-pit mining boils down to a very large hole being dug into our earth to extract diamonds. And, as long as there is more resource to find, the hole just continues to enlarge. Often, after a diamond company has pillaged the earth for every stone they can, they are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asked <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to rehab the land&#8230;although that doesn\u2019t always happen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn this context, the term [rehab] includes designing and constructing landforms and establishing sustainable ecosystems, depending on the use aimed for. This includes reconstructing a soil \u2018profile\u2019, choosing species, establishing plants and introducing animals,\u201d says a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/western-australia\/ten-thousand-abandoned-mines-in-wa-and-no-fix-in-sight-inquiry-20190325-p517fd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WA Today article.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, in Western Australia alone, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.watoday.com.au\/national\/western-australia\/ten-thousand-abandoned-mines-in-wa-and-no-fix-in-sight-inquiry-20190325-p517fd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ten thousand abandoned mines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have no rehab plans in sight. Some of these open pits are so large, they can be seen from outer space. And at other sites, such as The Diavik Diamond Mine in Canada, companies are doing their best to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/diavik-new-environmental-assessment-1.5100907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amend the original plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for rehab \u2014 hoping to use the land that they\u2019ve already destroyed as a holding ground for its own waste.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOpen-pit mining is to be considered one of the most dangerous sectors in the industrial world. It causes significant effects on miners&#8217; health, as well as damage to the ecological land. Open-pit mining causes changes to vegetation, soil, and bedrock, which ultimately contributes to changes in surface hydrology, groundwater levels, and flow paths,\u201d explains a study from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0303243415001105?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ScienceDirect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Underground Diamond Mining?<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underground diamond mining involves the creation of tunnels deep inside the earth to extract diamonds that were not found during open-pit mining. However, it is much more complex and, as a result, much more expensive. Essentially, two shafts are drilled along the sides of kimberlite \u2014 a rock that could potentially contain diamonds. Once the shafts are in, two parallel tunnels can be dug. Rock blasts are used in the top tunnel, in hopes that any diamonds inside of the kimberlite will fall to the second level.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But underground mining comes with its own set of challenges. Take for example the Snap Lake Mine in Northern Canada. After only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehudlaniado.com\/home\/index.php\/news\/entry\/on-land-underground-and-at-sea-the-many-types-of-diamond-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 years of mining operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it had to be placed under \u201ccare and maintenance\u201d due to water seepage issues. So what happens to all of the extra sediment? It\u2019s simply dumped back into the ocean. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/09\/03\/africa\/marine-diamond-mining-namibia\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a CNN article about the effects of offshore mining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kirsten Thompson, a marine scientist from the University of Exeter, gives her input.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Marine mining removes parts of the seabed with heavy machinery and habitat recovery from this type of disturbance can take decades,\u201d says Thompson.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the disturbance to the seabed isn\u2019t all that this type of mining can do. These huge ships are also causing increased noise and light pollution. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are The Outcomes?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at the two origins \u2014 labs vs mines \u2014 it\u2019s clear that both use technology and equipment to extract or create a diamond. A mined diamond consumes more than 126 gallons of water per carat. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, consume just 18 gallons. The mining also offsets delicate biodiversity balances and renders the land unusable \u2013 even once mining activities have ceased.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By comparison, lab-grown diamonds disrupt just 0.07 square feet of land per carat and only 1 pound of mineral waste. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frost.com\/sublib\/display-market-insight.do?id=293005646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Frost &amp; Sullivan\u2019s study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, diamond-growing facilities \u201care often located in areas that have a negligible impact on the environment and have almost no impact on biodiversity in the area of operation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, we\u2019ll let you decide.
