What is a Flawless Diamond?

A diamond with an internally flawless clarity is the highest clarity grade a diamond can have. Diamond clarity is how free of natural inclusions a diamond has under 10x magnification. All diamonds have inclusions, even lab grown diamonds. Inclusions happen while the diamond is forming in the ground or in a lab environment.

Flawless diamonds have no inclusions visible to the naked eye, nor do they have visible inclusions under 10x magnification. The clarity grade given to diamonds like these are graded with F clarity grades.

Flawless Diamonds vs Internally Flawless Diamonds

Internally flawless diamonds are often grouped with flawless diamonds. In the diamond trade, both are considered to be on the "flawless" clarity grade tier. There's little difference between an internally flawless diamond and a flawless diamond. The differences may be worth considering to you.

Very small surface blemishes may be seen under 10x magnification in internally flawless diamonds. Flawless diamonds don't. Neither IF diamond clarity or an F diamond's clarity have internal inclusions visible under magnification.

Are All Lab Grown Diamonds Flawless?

No, not all lab grown diamonds are flawless. Even though they are created in a lab, they still form under intense heat and pressure (the way a natural diamond forms deep in the mantle of the earth). And during this process they develop inclusions and blemishes, just like a natural or mined diamond does.

Are Flawless Lab Grown Diamonds Rare?

Flawless diamonds are extremely rare--whether they are natural diamonds or lab grown diamonds. It is more rare to have a perfect, rough crystal from natural origins. When forming in the ground, all sorts of minerals, gas, and air get trapped in the diamond crystal as the rough diamond grows.

In a lab environment, the inclusions are a little different. You won't see minute inclusions made from other minerals because of the diamond's isolation. However, visible inclusions happen when lab grown diamonds form too.

A flawless or internally flawless lab grown diamond is rare, but such diamonds easier to obtain than a flawless natural diamond.

How Much Is a Flawless Diamond?

There is no exact price on a flawless diamond. The diamond price is determined by a large number of factors. In addition to the diamond grades, the diamond shape, metal, grading lab, and fluorescence all play a role when determining a diamond's price.

You shouldn't see a difference between yellow gold, rose, and white gold in your ring size unless the karat is different. An 18K white gold engagement ring will cost more than a 14K yellow gold engagement ring. But a platinum ring will cost more than the 18K ring.

Another big factor is if you're buying flawless lab grown diamonds or natural diamonds. As a seller of lab grown diamonds only, Clean Origin offers lab grown diamonds that are 20-30% less expensive than mined diamonds. All of our diamonds are certified by the International Gemological Institute as real diamonds.

Is a Flawless Diamond Better than a VVS Diamond?

If you're going by technicality, flawless diamond clarity is better than VVS diamond clarity. Flawless diamonds and internally flawless diamonds are the highest tier of diamond clarity. The VVS diamond tier falls right underneath them. Then you have VS clarity, SI clarity, and I clarity being the lowest clarity on the scale.

VVS diamonds are broken down into two grades: VVS1 diamonds and VVS2 diamonds. The difference between the two vvs clarity grades is minimal. VVS clarity stands for Very Very Slightly Included. A VVS2 diamond is a lower clarity grade than a VVS1 diamond.

If you were to place a one carat vvs diamond next to an internally flawless diamond of the same carat weights, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference with the naked eye. Under 10x magnification, it'd be different.

When looking through a jeweler's loupe, microscope, or at 360˚ videos online, you may notice more inclusions in VVS diamonds. VVS diamonds may have a few minor inclusions, usually white in color.

Internally flawless diamonds may have a tiny blemish or two on the surface. Both clarity grades would make beautiful diamonds for engagement rings or diamond earrings.

Are Flawless Diamonds Worth It?
Whether or not a flawless diamond is worth the money is an individual choice, especially considering the high price. Even if you're going with a fancy shape diamond, like an emerald or Asscher (where inclusions are more obvious to the naked eye), you can still find one of exceptional quality and clarity that is eye clean--without it being a flawless diamond.
How Can You Tell a Flawless Diamond?

The presence of inclusions in diamonds are often said to be a key factor in determining if a diamond engagement ring is real. That can be true for a lower clarity grade like SI diamonds or I clarity diamonds.

SI diamonds have a few inclusions that may be dark in nature. Those inclusions are likely to be seen both with the naked eye and under magnification.

If you've chosen round diamonds, it gets more difficult. Round diamonds have the best light performance and sparkle out of all the diamond shapes. Noticeable inclusions from a lower clarity may not be visible with the naked eye with those shapes.

You might not notice inclusions if your diamond has eye-clean clarity. Diamonds are considered eye-clean if they have no visible inclusions to the naked eye. VS diamonds, VVS diamonds, IF diamonds, and F diamonds are all considered to be eye-clean clarity grades for diamonds.

It's already difficult to see the difference between an internally flawless diamond a vvs diamond, as you know. And you also know the price difference between the two diamonds is great. In this case, how would you know if you were actually receiving the right diamond you were paying for?

The answer to that question is diamond certification. A diamond certificate and grading report from reputable gemological laboratories are the best way to make sure you have an internally flawless or flawless diamond on your hands. At Clean Origin, we offer lab grown diamonds that are certified by the International Gemological Institute.
