People use GIA's diamond color grading scale to distinguish between one diamond's color and another easily. The diamond color scale ranges from a D color grade to Z.
What's the Difference Between Colorless and Near Colorless Diamonds?
A D color diamond is as close as you can get to white diamonds and is the highest color grade, making it extremely rare and expensive. E color diamonds are also colorless, as finding even a slight hint of color takes incredible effort. F color diamonds round out the colorless range.
Near colorless diamonds follow colorless diamonds, with G color diamonds being the highest grade of near colorless diamonds. On its own, it isn't easy to perceive any color in a near colorless diamond, but when you compare it side-by-side to diamonds with higher color grades, it does become more noticeable. J color diamonds are the minimum color grade to be considered a near colorless diamond.
Lower Color Grade Diamonds
The lower the color grade, the more a diamond appears to have a yellow tint. A lower color grade doesn't necessarily indicate a lower diamond quality. There are other factors to consider when assessing the quality of a diamond. Yellow diamonds are known to pair well with antique yellow gold settings that give them a distinct warmth.
How Do I Choose a Lab Grown Near Colorless Diamond?
Before you buy a lab grown near colorless diamond, you'll want to inspect it under lighting conditions. A diamond's color can vary in appearance under different lights, so you want to ensure you are comfortable with how your near colorless diamond will look in them.
You also want to keep in mind the shape of your near colorless diamond. A round diamond has greater shine than other shaped diamonds, so its color is less apparent. However, an emerald cut diamond with fewer facets will allow a more transparent look into the diamond and its color.
If you opt for a rectangular-shaped diamond, we recommend investing in a high-quality cut and clarity diamond.
Is A Yellow Gold Ring A Good Choice for a Near Colorless Diamond Engagement Ring?
Absolutely! Near colorless diamonds are often used in yellow gold solitaire rings but can also be used with platinum or white gold settings. The color choice for near colorless diamond rings is ultimately a personal preference.
