The carat weight of a diamond is the measurement of the diamond's mass. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams, or about 0.2 grams, roughly the weight of a paperclip.

Carat is often confused with karat, but they are two completely different units of measurement. Karat is a measurement that indicates the purity of gold, such as 14k gold and 18k gold--it has nothing to do with diamonds.

Be careful not to confuse a diamond's carat weight with its size; they are not the same. While diamond size generally correlates to the carat weight, this is not always the case. At times, diamonds with larger carat weights can appear smaller when compared to diamonds with more surface area.

Why? The more surface area a diamond has, the more likely it will appear larger after viewing the table face up. While a 2.0-carat may be larger than a 1.5-carat diamond, if the 2.0 holds most of its weight hidden under the diamond girdle and the 1.5-carat diamond has an elongated shape with maximum surface area, the smaller diamond will appear larger.

Generally, the larger the carat weight, the greater the diamond price. But the diamond's cut can make a difference, too. A small diamond may be more costly than a larger, poorly cut diamond if it receives higher ratings in every 4C grading: clarity, color, and cut quality.

Understand Cut Quality

One of the most important aspects of buying a diamond is its cut quality. It refers to how well the diamond can reflect light. The round-cut is the only diamond shape the GIA assigns cut quality grades. With other shapes, it's difficult or impossible for the grading system to take into account all of the variations in light reflection.

Be Clear on Clarity

Consider the Color Grade

Diamond color grades measure how much color is in each diamond. Diamonds are gradedon a scale from D-Z, with D being the highest grade for colorless diamonds and Z being the lowest. Clean Origin only offers diamonds with a J-color grade (with a slight yellow tint) to a D-color grade (completely colorless).

Thanks to the various methods of cutting facets, some diamond shapes require a higher color grade than others. For example, an emerald-cut 1.5-carat diamond ring must have prioritized clarity and color grade--both of which can make a noticeable difference in the appearance of your diamond.
