What is a VS1 diamond?

A VS1 diamond is one of the clarity grades on the VS tier of the diamond clarity scale. The scale is made up of multiple tiers and individual clarity grades. The VS tier is the first tier considered to be eye-clean, or free of natural inclusions to the naked eye. Even a skilled grader might not be able to see the inclusions.

Diamond clarity is how free of natural inclusions in a diamond under 10x magnification using a jeweler's loupe, microscope, or via 360˚ videos online. A VS1 is considered to be Very Slightly Included. This means that VS1 diamonds may have very slight inclusions visible under magnification.

VS1 diamonds often have very small feathers or white pinpoints in its structure. VS clarity diamonds are susceptible to both internal inclusions and external surface blemishes.

VS1 Clarity Diamonds versus VS2 Diamond

VS diamonds are made up of two clarity grades: VS1 diamonds and VS2 diamonds. According to the clarity scale, VS1 diamonds are the higher clarity grade.

We carry both VS1 clarity diamonds and VS2 clarity diamonds in our inventory. Our lab g

Is VS1 or VVS1 Better?

VVS diamonds are a higher clarity grade than VS1 clarity diamonds. A VVS1 clarity grade is two grades higher than a VS1 diamond grade. As per the clarity grading scale, VVS1 diamond clarity would be better than a VS1 clarity diamond.

If using the naked eye, you'd probably have a difficult time telling the difference between VS1 diamonds and VVS1 clarity with the naked eye. That's not only true for engagement rings either. From far away, a person wouldn't be able to tell the difference in clarity grades if they were diamond studs in your ears. Slightly included diamonds may have inclusions visible to the naked eye, but no one is going to notice standing right in front of you. Not even a diamond expert.

On the other hand, maybe you're looking for pristine diamond clarity for a larger carat weight. In this case, a 3 carat diamond with VVS1 diamond clarity would be better to have than a VS1 clarity. Both clarity grades are high quality, but diamonds with higher clarity are suitable for larger carat weights.

Are VS1 Diamonds Real?

VS1 diamonds are real diamonds. A VS1 clarity diamond as well as all other clarity grades for diamonds can be real diamonds. A VS1 diamond created in a laboratory is a real diamond too. Both lab-grown VS1 diamonds and natural diamonds are real diamonds.

If you are every concerned about a VS1 diamond not being real, you should make sure you buy one from a reputable gemological laboratory. Our lab grown diamonds are graded by the GIA, GCAL, IGI, and GSI grading labs.

How Much Does A VS1 Diamond Cost?

The cost of VS1 diamond clarity grades is hard to say, given that diamonds aren't priced on clarity grades alone. Many factors contribute to the overall cost of a diamond. If all of your diamond grades are high alongside a 2 carat VS1 diamond, the price of your diamond will be significantly higher. This is especially true for larger diamonds.

But if you have a 3/4 carat VS1 clarity diamond with excellent cut quality and a lower grade for color like J, it'll be less. It's much easier to cut eye clean diamonds that are smaller for engagement rings than it is to cut larger diamonds.

If you really want to save money on the cost of a VS1 diamond, you might consider a shape besides round. Round brilliant cut diamonds have the best light performance of all diamond shapes. They are also the most expensive.

Choosing another diamond shape can lessen the cost of your VS1 diamond. However, some diamond shapes may make inclusions visible and more apparent. This can be an issue with step cut diamonds, like the emerald cut shape or Asscher cuts which have a large table facet. A step cut diamond flashes, but brilliant cut diamonds sparkle.

Brilliant cut shapes are better for hiding a diamond's clarity imperfections. Your brilliant cut shapes are round, princess cut, oval, pear, radiant, and cushion cut diamonds.

You should consider purchasing VS1 lab grown diamonds. Lab grown diamonds cost significantly less than mined diamonds of the same grade. Because they're created in a lab, it'll be easier to find one that's eye clean as well. VS1 lab grown diamonds can be 20-40% less expensive than natural diamonds with VS1 clarity.

Is a VS1 Diamond Good?

A VS1 diamond is the perfect match for your dream engagement ring. It is an eye clean clarity grade, meaning there are only minor inclusions seen with magnification aids. You shouldn't see any eye visible inclusions with the naked eye.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't assume that all VS1 diamonds are good. Diamond quality is not dependent on one factor alone. Just like VS1 diamond prices, there are different contributing factors to owning a "good diamond".

When speaking on a clarity grade level, VS1 diamonds are often recommended by most jewelers. It's the first tier of an eye clean diamond. VS1 diamonds are very slightly included diamonds, but there is virtually no distinction between a VS1 diamond and internally flawless diamond clarity when looking at them with the unaided eye, even to the trained grader or trained gemologist.

But if you were to have a 3 carat weight emerald cut VS1 clarity diamond with K color grades, others might not consider that a "good diamond". Choosing a diamond for an engagement ring is about weighing pros and cons, personal preference, choosing what matters most to you. If a high clarity grade is necessary for your engagement ring purchase, a VS1 clarity diamond is good for a 1 carat diamond.

A 2 carat diamond with VS1 clarity may have inclusions that the naked eye can see. In this case, it might not be an eye clean diamond anymore. Small, dark inclusions turn into more visible inclusions when the carat weight of the diamond is higher.
