What Is a Toi et Moi Ring?

Unlike most engagement rings, toi et moi rings do not have a single center stone. Instead, this beautiful ring features two gemstones that represent the two individuals in a relationship.

Toi et moi rings can be designed in many different ways. Whether you prefer colored gemstones (like an emerald or sapphire), white diamonds, stones with traditional or fancy shapes, yellow gold or white gold, or even a traditional or twisted band, you can easily create the perfect statement piece with the toi et moi style ring.

Toi et moi engagement rings became popular in the late 18th century when Napoleon Bonaparte gave one to his future wife, Josephine de Beauharnais. In the 50s, President John F. Kennedy gave Jackie Kennedy a toi et moi engagement ring (which she eventually modified).

And more recently, younger celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, Emily Ratajkowski, and Megan Fox have been spotted wearing toi et moi style rings with their own special touches and meanings.

Toi et Moi Engagement Ring Meaning

As demonstrated by Kylie Jenner (who sports matching toi et moi rings with her daughter, Stormi), this two stone ring style can celebrate the significance of many types of relationships, not just the romantic kind.

However, because an engagement ring has the sole purpose of representing commitment between two lovers, the two gemstones in any toi et moi engagement ring represent the couple–and the ring celebrates their special bond of love and devotion to one another.

The History of Toi et Moi Rings: Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais

The engagement and eventual marriage of Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine de Beauharnais was, by all accounts, quite scandalous. Madame de Beauharnais was a widow with two children, and she was also six years older than Napoleon.

However, against the advice of family and friends, Napoleon proposed to her because he was absolutely infatuated. When he proposed, he presented her with a toi et moi engagement ring with a pear shape sapphire and diamond set on a slim yellow gold band. Each sparkling gemstone in this historically significant toi et moi ring is just under one carat.

Their marriage did not stand the test of time, but the ring did. In fact, it was sold in March 2013 by French jewelry house Osenat for close to $1 million.

The Jackie Kennedy Toi et Moi Engagement Ring

When President John F. Kennedy proposed to Jackie Kennedy in 1953, he didn't initially have an engagement ring to give her. They eventually chose Jackie's stunning Van Cleef & Arpels toi et moi ring together. And much like the public's fascination with Jackie and her impeccable style, people were intrigued by her ring choice. Thanks to her, the toi et moi design experienced a resurgence in popularity.

Her stunning toi et moi ring features both a 2.84 carat emerald and a 2.88 carat emerald cut diamond. Both gemstones were set in a yellow gold band and framed by baguette diamonds.

Some years later, Jackie Kennedy had her ring redesigned.

She had the baguette diamonds replaced with marquise shaped diamonds. The baguette diamonds were arranged to create the look of a laurel wreath holding both the emerald and the emerald cut diamond. Several small round brilliant diamonds have also been added to the band of the ring.

Celebrity Toi et Moi Engagement Rings

Modern toi et moi rings are incredibly versatile; they can be designed to be as simple or ornate as you want. Possible combinations are unbound!

Choose from rose gold to platinum metals and a myriad of diamond shapes. And while Jackie Kennedy's ring was quite intricate, there are many examples of a simpler two stone engagement ring–like the ring model, and actress Emily Ratajkowski chose.

Emily Ratajkowski became engaged to actor and producer Sebastian Bear McClard in 2018. Together, Bear McClard and Ratajkowski designed a 5 carat toi et moi ring that features two diamonds: a 2 carat princess cut diamond and a 3 carat pear shape diamond set atop a thin 18k yellow gold band.

When Megan Fox became engaged to Machine Gun Kelly, he gave her a unique and modern toi et moi ring he designed with British jeweler Stephen Webster. The ring is comprised of two separate bands; one features a pear cut diamond, and the other a pear shaped emerald. The two rings are drawn together by magnets, and when both are worn as a set, the two pear shaped gemstones form an obscure heart.

Despite the romantic sentiment of this beautifully designed toi et moi ring, it has one feature that sparked controversy among fans: thorns.

If Megan Fox wants to remove her ring, the thorns dig into her finger and cause pain. Regardless of how unconventional this feature seems to the couple's fans, Fox has gone on record to say that she loves her ring because it suits her personal preference–thorns and all.

While Megan Fox's toi et moi ring drew negative attention, Ariana Grande managed to gain interest in her engagement ring for very different reasons. Not only does her ring carry a large amount of sweet and personal sentiment, but it also boasts an unexpected feature: a lustrous pearl set alongside a traditional oval cut diamond.

Toi et moi rings can include any type of gemstone, and pearls are no exception. Grande's engagement ring from her now husband, Dalton Gomez, incorporates an oval shaped diamond set at an untraditional angle next to a more traditional pearl–all on a simple yet elegant yellow gold band.

The pearl has a special meaning to Ariana Grande. After her grandfather passed away, her nonna gave her a ring set with the pearl from her grandfather's tie pin. Grande's nonna claimed her late husband visited her in a dream and told her the pearl would keep Grande safe.

There is no way to know whether the pearl in Grande's toi et moi ring is the same one from her grandfather's tie pin, but even if it isn't, the touching sentiment remains. It is the perfect ring for her.
